TIMBUCKII Forever Social Promo
Handlettering, illustration, art direction, design.
DJ TimbuckII was a renowned Chicago DJ who passed away at the young age of 32 from a rare form of cancer. In his honor, his family and friends established the Timothy Francis Jones Foundation, a non profit raising awareness for the importance of staying healthy directed towards men in the black community. I had the pleasure of helping the foundation with some promotional imagery for the 2nd annual and 4th annual live event, which brought together DJs, MCs, and musicians to raise money and bring everyone together in celebration of DJ TimbuckII.
2nd Annual Event
Tim already has logo, a nice and clean serif, but I had an idea that the “forever” part of the branding could be something special that evolved each year with the design. This year I chose to create a calligraphic script to arch over him. Tim practiced the Islamic faith so I tried to incorporate some arabesque swashes and elements. The overall design is meant to reference a magazine cover.
4th Annual Event
For year 4 we decided to have a little more fun and to go bold. I thought it was worth creating movement and animating the image a bit. I hand-lettered the script again but decided to take a more gestural and dimensional approach. Rather than using a photo, I decided to illustrate Tim’s portrait. He’s pictured in his zone, behind the booth curating his set to keep the party alive. And, for a second social post we decided to feature his tattoo, a recognizable trait on his forearm.
The design was well received, so we decided to take it a step further and print up posters, taking the social promo to the streets, wheat pasting is all around Chicago.
